Empty legs, bookings and payments
What is an empty leg?
It is a private flight that has to fly without passengers, usually to reach the airport where the next client is waiting or to return to base after a one-way charter. Operators sell these legs at a reduced price rather than fly them empty.
Why is it so much cheaper than a charter?
The flight takes place anyway and part of its cost is already covered. The operator only needs to recover some of it, so the price can be a fraction of a normal private charter on the same route.
Can the flight change or be cancelled?
Yes. An empty leg depends on the flight it is attached to, so the operator may move the departure time or, in rare cases, cancel it. If the operator cancels, you receive a full refund and an email straight away.
What if I need to cancel?
The refund policy depends on the operator and is shown at checkout, before you pay: for example a full refund up to 48 hours before departure. The policy is saved with your booking and does not change afterwards. You can cancel from the link in your confirmation email.
Do I have to book the whole jet?
Not always. You can always book the whole aircraft for your group. When the operator allows it, you can also buy single seats; the flight page shows both prices and how many seats are left.
How much luggage can I bring?
It depends on the aircraft: light jets have a smaller hold than midsize or heavy jets. As a rule of thumb, plan one medium soft bag per passenger on light jets. For skis, golf bags or bulky items, contact us before booking and we will check with the operator.
Can I travel with my pet?
Many operators accept pets in the cabin, subject to the aircraft and to the entry rules of the destination country. Write to us before booking so we can confirm it with the operator.
Which documents do I need?
The same as for any flight: a valid ID card or passport for each passenger, as required by the destination. At checkout we ask for each passenger's name, date of birth, nationality and document number, which the operator needs for the passenger manifest.
Is payment secure?
Yes. Payments are processed by Stripe, a PCI DSS Level 1 certified provider, and go directly to the operator's account. Your card details never pass through our servers. Your booking is confirmed only once the payment has gone through.
Can I get an invoice?
Yes. Your confirmation email shows the amount paid. If you need an invoice made out to you or your company, write to us with your booking reference and your billing details.
Where and when do I board?
Private flights leave from the general aviation terminal of the airport, not from the main terminal. Arrive about 30 minutes before departure: there are no long queues and security checks are quick.
Who operates the flights?
Licensed air carriers holding a valid air operator certificate. JetHopper is a marketplace: the operator is named on every flight page and is responsible for the flight.
How do route alerts work?
Choose a departure and/or a destination, optionally dates, a budget and the number of passengers. After you confirm your email, we write to you when a matching empty leg is published, at most once an hour. Every email has a link to unsubscribe in one click.
Do I need an account to book?
No. You can book as a guest: we send you a secure link to view and manage your booking. With an account you also find all your bookings in one place.
